Dr. Shafizadeh

Dr. Shafizadeh is double-board certified in General Urology as well as Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at the Weill Cornell School of Medicine.

Dr. Shafizadeh fled his native Iran on foot as a young teen during the horrific years of the Iran-Iraq War. Making his way across the mountains and deserts of Iran into Pakistan and then to Vienna, Dr. Shafizadeh arrived in the United States in 1985.

He attended school during the day and worked at nights to support himself and later on his family. He attended college on a full academic scholarship with a concentration in biophysics, subsequently receiving his medical degree from the State University of New York at Down State, Brooklyn. Dr. Shafizadeh completed both his general surgery and urology residencies at Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center.

Upon completing his residency, Dr. Shafizadeh was appointed assistant director of Urology at Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan. Soon thereafter, he also became the residency coordinator for Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Urology at Cabrini Medical Center where he was extensively involved with residency training and teaching, a long held interest along with practicing medicine and surgery. He is currently the director of the Voiding and Sexual Dysfunction Program at New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital where his practice is focused on treating men and women with sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Dr. Shafizadeh is an expert in minimally invasive robotic surgeries to treat women with bladder and vaginal prolapse and men with enlarged prostate or BPH.

Dr. Shafizadeh’s training in and affiliation with such major academic medical centers as Mount Sinai Medical Center and New York Presbyterian, all located in New York City which has always been at the forefront of medical research and breakthroughs, allow him to remain on the cutting edge of the field of Urology and to quickly adopt the most advanced surgical and minimally invasive treatments into his practice.

Presently at New York Urologic, Dr. Shafizadeh and his team have developed the only in-office Cryosurgery center for men with prostate cancer.  Dr. Shafizadeh is the only urologist in New York who provides patients with MRI-guided trans-perineal prostate biopsy which is currently one of the safest and most accurate means of diagnosing clinically significant prostate cancer.  Similarly, his practice is the only one in New York City to offer focal or whole gland cryosurgery for the treatment of patients with prostate cancer in an office setting.

In addition to prostate cancer, Dr. Shafizadeh has extensive experience in using minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of men with an enlarged prostate.  Some of these treatments include Urolift and ReZum procedures that are done in the office under IV sedation or local anesthesia.

Dr. Shafizadeh’s educational background in physics and engineering, along with a creative mind, passion for research, and vast knowledge and skill in the field of urology not only as a scientist but also as a clinician have provided him with a unique opportunity to be involved with various types of innovative research studies and technological developments, both in an advisory capacity as well as lead researcher.

Besides the fields of prostate cancer and voiding dysfunction, Dr. Shafizadeh has a very special interest in treating men and women with sexual dysfunction.  This has also led him to develop procedures in the field of cosmetic urology focusing on body contouring, stem cell treatments for the restoration of sexual function, cosmetic circumcision, labiaplasty, and vaginoplasty procedures.

Most importantly, Dr. Shafizadeh sees his patients as distinct individuals with unique needs and desires. One of his most important attributes is his ability to listen to his patients and to help them understand their conditions and treatment options. Each and every patient is treated with care and confidence.
